Join your neighbors at the Playground Parking Lot at French Creek State Park near Birdsboro, Berks County for exciting evenings exploring the wonders of the heavens. This event is free of charge provided to the community by your neighbors who are members of the Chesmont Astronomical Society.
The French Creek Star Party Series has been established to share with you (the public) what we as amateur astronomers pursue every month during the Dark Window (the period between 3rd and 1st quarter moon phases when the sky is darkest). In other words, we are going to go deep (as in Deep Sky Objects). We will be observing star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, planets, and other wonders of the night sky. Less emphasis is going to be placed on observing the Moon.
For safety reasons, the loop road going into the playground parking lot will be closed to car traffic. Parking will be at the Hopewell Lake boat launch with overflow at the French Creek Ranger Station (see map). The side benefit of this is that the observing area will be kept nice and dark. Please, use red light flashlights (if you have them). If not we will have a supply of small red LED lights to provide as loaners ($5/light deposit, please).
Because these events are clear, dark sky, and weather dependent be sure to check our website after 5:00 pm for last minute schedule changes.
