Our speaker this month will be John Conrad, our NASA/JPL Ambassador.
The second of two talks completing everything you need to know about ‘rocket science.’ From a historical and insider’s perspective, you’ll understand how and why satellites orbit where they do – with just enough about Newton and Kepler and their laws to feel superior to the average layperson. Furthermore, we’ll cover the way spacecraft function, from the smallest and simplest to the largest and most complex – with even a bit about the new revolution in nanosatellites to understand what’s coming!
PLUS, Karl’s Galaxies for Observing in the April Dark Window.

Here’s a preview:
Because the mechanism for the origin of life on Earth is currently unknown and because apparently life arose very early in the evolution of the planet, some astrobiologists indicate that the time interval between Earth’s formation and the rise of life is too small for the requisite complex biochemistry to have occurred. Scientists have suggested life arose elsewhere in the Galaxy and was deposited here in ejecta from some planet on which life formed. In particular, we will investigate whether genetic material can survive the time scales needed for interstellar trajectories and the damaging effects of the ubiquitous cosmic rays in our Galaxy.
