It almost seems like visiting the Moon is new all over again in this 50th anniversary year of Apollo 11. The Apollo series of visits both raised and answered many lunar science questions in an avalanche of discovery. Numerous visits in the intervening years by the US (LRO, LCross, GRAIL, etc.) as well as by Russia, Japan, India, Israel, and China have contributed many more discoveries, including . . . water on the moon! This year 2019 is bringing both new highlights – China’s Chang’e 4 landing and roving on the far side – and new plans for NASA to return to the Moon’s surface within about 5 years, in cooperation with other nation’s space agencies.
